FAQ & Operating Instructions
Official operating and care guidelines for El-Toro electric brands, fire-heated brands, freeze brands, dehorners, cauterizers, and twine cutters. Use these instructions to support safe operation, clear marks, and long-term equipment performance.
Electric Brands — Operating Instructions
- Preheat for 2–3 minutes until the head reaches full working temperature.
- Clip long hair to ensure a clear, readable identification mark.
- Apply firm, even pressure for approximately 5–10 seconds — the hide should appear light brown, not burned.
- Maintain steady contact without rocking to avoid blurred marks.
- Clean using a wire brush.
Always unplug the unit during breaks or when left unattended.
Dehorners & Cauterizers
Built for controlled, precise heat in livestock handling environments.
- Preheat until the head reaches a steady working temperature.
- Ensure horn tissue and hair are completely dry before contact.
- Apply steady, controlled pressure until the tissue seals cleanly.
- Clean using a wire brush.
Freeze Brand Method
- Cool irons using dry ice or liquid nitrogen until temperature stabilizes.
- Clip hair short and clean the area with room-temperature alcohol.
- Apply firm, even pressure for 30–50 seconds depending on species and age.
- Swelling is normal; white hair growth typically appears in 2–3 months.
Wear insulated gloves and handle cryogenic materials in a well-ventilated space.
Cleaning & Maintenance
- Clean using a wire brush. Do not use grinding tools or harsh abrasives.
- Do not quench heated irons in water, sand, or ice — rapid cooling can damage components.
- Allow equipment to cool naturally before storage.
- Store in a dry area away from fertilizers or ammonia vapours.
- Inspect handles, elements, and cords for wear before each season.
Safety Precautions
- Use proper restraint such as a squeeze chute or calf table for controlled movement.
- Do not apply brands to wet or damp hide.
- Keep fuel sources, bedding, and flammable materials away from heat tools.
- Unplug electric units before cleaning, servicing, or inspection.
